Using a dual G5 sometimes I had 3 different kind of crashes:

1 - an application simply quits;
2 - an application hung the entire system with devices (keyboard, mouse etc...) totally unresponsive;
3 - an application hung the entire system and the screen went grayed out with a central black box with white text that says: "You need to restart your system. Hold down the power key..." or something similar. Here too devices went totally unresponsive.

Only keyboard and mouse were attached to the mac and no "system extensions" were installed.

I'm worried that crash #2 happens when encoding in iDVD and crash #3 happens when encoding in ffmpegX. No other intensive apps (rendering, quicktime, iMovie, Toast) all together result in crashes #2 and #3.

What's going on with ffmpegX and iDVD (encoding)? More important what is the difference between crash #2 and #3?

In the hope that this is not an HW problem...

Thanx
Sam
