I was wondering if someone could tell me what sort of problem my iMac has. During startup my G3 iMac has screen blemish the color of pea soup. The screen surrounding the white box that says Mac OS 9.2 should be uniformly gray, but in the case of my iMac, there is a faint shadow of this box which as aforementioned is the color of pea soup.

Recently I re-initialized my hard disk and clean-installed my system software, and then updated the OS from 9.04 step by step to 9.2

All help greatly appreciated.

Hi roving_bovine.

First up, you should have posted this in the iMac & eMac Forum not the PowerMac forum, but you live and learn and all that

Anyway, the background behind the Mac OS 9 startup screen is actually a bunch of black and white dots in a checkerboard pattern. This looks llike gray most of the time, but at certain resolutions, on a curved screen like the G3 iMac's, the image can get distorted. This can look like a number of things, usually just strange patterns on the screen, but can also look like various colours.

If your screen looks fine once the computer is started (and on the screen where the desktop is behind the Mac OS 9 logo, and the extensions are dancing along the bottom of the screen), there's probably nothing to worry about.

Greetings roving_bovine,

Worry not. That "Pea Green" background occurred twice on my DV iMac during my 4 year ownership. An immediate restart rectified the problem. Ironically, it was only with OS 9.2; after OS X installation, the problem never reoccurred.
