Finally, we are setting our lab computers with Panther (moving from OS9). So far a 1.6 G5, an eMac, two TiPB, 2 iBooks, and a couple of iMacs. I've been in charge since I've been running OS X since the slow 10.0.4 days. Yesterday, I instaled Panther in an old PM G4 400 (640MB/120GB HD/20 GB HD), so far very impressed with performance. Runs as smooth as OS 9, but multitasking, networking, and the whole experience is far better, even in 4 years old hardware

Sounds good to me,
I'm running Panther on an even slower machine with less memory and it runs faster and better than OS9 to me. G3 B&W w/256mb RAM, 12GB HDD. I love it. Planning hardware upgrades next year

i'm running panther on a G4 450, and it's great. i also have it running on an old iMac DV SE G3 400, and i actually think it's faster on that machine than on mine. but that may be because i have tons of crap on my hd, while the iMac is kinda barren.

A clean install helps a lot. My G4/400 was slow in X 10.2.8 it even had trouble keeping up with fast typing in word! But then I had installed the public beta of X and then updated and updated on a HD filled with tons of stuff so everything in the OS was scattered all over the place. Now if I could just get around to reformat and reinstall what I use as opposed to what I have collected over the years...

Glad to hear of the good experiences as I have Panther waiting in a box, to install on my trusty G4 400. Any of you have external hard drives? Any problems with that? That's my big concern right now. Well, that and also installing it on my 12-in PB -- as I don't want to run into Internet access problems because of one running Panther and one running Jag.
So -- any problems with external HDs blowing up?

Only FireWire 800 drives, which your Mac doesn't support anyway.

YUP Mine works GREAT as well. I installed it on my G4 450 soon to be upgraded to 800 tonight. It worked great just a few things were a little slow like rendering in iMovie and iDVD

Typhoon -- what brand upgrade are you using? Your setup is really close to mine. I just bought some more memory, which will bring me up to 770 something or another (don't feel like doiing the math!) and also want to add an upgrade card. I know, I know, I could buy a new machine, but hey, this one is only 3 years old and I figure it has AT LEAST another year in it, expecially with an upgrade to 800 MZ. I have 400 MZ now.
Let me know if you have any troubles. Officially, of course, Panther isn't supported in machines with processor upgrades.

I just got the Sonnet 800MHz upgrade. I didn't want to spend too much since I want to try and keep it for another year or so. I'm actually selling another 800 from Sonnet as long as your MB is not a "Yikes" board this upgrade will work. PM me if you are interested.
This upgrade is AWESOME. Simple to install and my Machine actually feels VERY usable now. Installs are quicker. Apps open quicker. Definitely worth the money.
