I am planing on buying a Dual 2 gig G5 next month. I currently have a 733 G4 with 2 stock 60gb ata drives and a gig of ram. Will my ram and my drives from the g4 work with the new G5? I know that the Ram says its SDRAM. ALso what do you guys think about waiting until after MWSF to purchase a new machine. All this tak about new Screens and Processor upgrades, just a lot of talk or worth the wait?

Thanks
Jackpot

Nope.

And wait for Macworld just in case.

what makes the Ata Drive in the G5 different from the G4, is the G5 SATA?

The G5 is SATA, yes, and no ATA-SATA adapters wont work. Apple has a kbase doc on this.

If you want to keep your ATA drives, either 1. pick up some FW cases on eBay or a Sonnet ATA controller card.

Your 733 uses PC133 SDRAM, the new Dual G5 uses PC3200 DDR400 SDRAM.

even if a speed bumped powermac is announced at macworld mid jan... there is no way they will be shipping immediately in line with past apple trends of announcing and then shipping about 10 weeks later!
so you may as well buy and enjoy. i ordered our dual 2GHz in beginning of September and it only arrived there about a week and a half ago. It will more than likely be the same story when a speed bump is announced. Buy and enjoy... There will always be rumors of someting newer and faster around the corner. The only guaranteed thing i know is that the biggest speed bumps are not gonna come from MHz increases but from optimized code actually tapping into the full potential of the hardware. Something that nothing presently is doing. Already some tests show speed doubling if not trippling in certain circumstances from recompilation of existing code with newer compilers from IBM. I say buy your G5 today, enjoy it and roll on more optimized apps to make these new puppies sing.
