Anyone know for %100 certain, the only thing that's making me think it's not possible is the new SerialATA system in the G5 that makes older hard drives incompatible.
The optical drives in the G5 still play on a normal, run of the mill IDE bus, so I don't see an issue in adding a normal IDE DVD-RW drive in place of whatever drive you'll be getting with the box.. only the HDs run on an SATA bus.
I did the exact same thing. I have a Superdrive in my 533 G4 and I plan on swapping the Combo drive in the G5 with it. The only problem I've encounter is it's very very difficult to get the Combo drive out of the G5. I gave up a couple of weeks ago but will give it another go this weekend. The tolerances are very tight and it's just hard to pull on it sideways.
