Hi,

My Powermac G4 that I purchased 2 months ago has started to have kernel panics. I tried playing with hardware a bit (reseating stuff) and then I tried to do a clean install of panther with only stock stuff attatched. Still got kernel panics.

So I called up Apple and they told me that my best bet was to take my G4 to a specialist to get troubleshooted.

However, I'm unclear on this procedure. The guy on the phone kept pressuring me for AppleCare and told me I'd have to pay for troubleshooting and stuff.

I thought the 1 year warranty covered all repairs for free...? Where would I take my G4? Can I take it to any "Apple Specialist" place listed on Apple's site and have them repair it for me -- for no charge since I'm under warranty?

thanks

With your bill go to any authorized Apple repair and they will fix it for free if it is within a year and it is a hardware problem.

Before you do though try taking out any 3rd party RAM and see if that solves it.

Great, thanks for the info.

Yeah, the problems started around the time I put 3rd party memory in. But then I took it out and I still got kernel panics.

I've:
taken machine back to the way it was when I bought it (hardware wise)
formatted and reinstalled panther
reseated memory
zapped pram
repaired permissions
fsck'd

and well, nothing seems to fix it, so I guess I'm off to the local repair shop
