Hi I am wondering what the latest consensus is on what's the best vid card to get in the G5 besides the Top of the line ATI.
Should I go with the standard Nvidia offering or get the ATI for a little over $60 more?? (Canadian)
What's the word on this?

The 9600 is far far better for such a small sum more IMHO.

Like always, it depends on whether you want to play games or not. If yes, forking out the additional $60 will have a huge impact on framerates.
If you use that Mac for work mostly, it's not worth even a dime since you won't notice the difference at all.

get the 9600 if you are planning on using it with games at all.

Get the 9600, even if you only play games once in a while or if you plan on keeping the computer for more than a little while...
With my G4, I opted for the Rage 128 Pro, when I could have had the original Radeon. When Quartz Extreme was announced, I ended up biting the bullet and buying the Radeon through Apple.
It cost me more in the long run...
Just a thought,
Tom

what about 9600 vs 9800, though? It's a pretty big cost difference (315-240, depending on your situation)
Also, for us po' folk it kinda sucks you have to use an adapter for VGA on a Pro card.
edit: OT, but can you add the bluetooth module later?

It is a huge cost difference, and again, the difference is astronomical.
OT: No. It's CTO only.

I hardly ever play games on the Mac, though I do have a few installed, but couldn't resist buying an ATi Radeon 9800 Pro when I saw them on sale at CancomUK for only £150 (ish) inc VAT. I tried telling them that the price was wrong but they insisted it was right and sold me one
They've put the price up to over £300 now....don't suppose I'll ever get that kinda deal again
Oh btw, to remain on topic.....get the 9600 if you want to play games....

same rule as for any computer purchase - get the best you can for the money available to you. at the end of the day, even if you get the top of the line it will be more or less mid-range within 18 months, the way the 970 chip is scaling.
i just got a dp 1.8 at the uk apple expo. they only increased my quote by £60 to upgrade from the 9600 to 9800. i've come from an emac so don't have a good comparison but this thing simply rocks when it comes to unreal etc.

The only reason to keep the 5200 is that you won't get the "chirp". I'd get the 9600 though.

Wow, I would have bought 20 of them and placed them on ebay.
