I was running the firmware update and had a little problem. I think the problem was that an app was hung when I told it to shut down and the firmware update wouldn't complete. It shut down, but my computer is lifeless now. It will boot up, there is no picture on the monitor and after a while the fans will all rev to full speed and it just sits there miserably. I've tried to boot from the CD that came with the computer by holding down the "C" key, but it won't. It just does the same thing.

I assume I've corrupted my firmware. Does anyone know how to fix this or will I have to take it back to the apple store?

This is exactly the type of thing you take to the genius bar.

Having not run the G5 firmware update I can't be 100% certain, but I know that the G4 firmare updates didn't happen until after a restart. Meaning a hung app wouldn't have any effect as the firmware wouldn't have occured yet.

I know on the G4, the machine would restart, boot to a screen with a progress bar, it would update the firmware, and thats that. The G5 might be different, but I highly doubt that it would patch the firmware with all of MacOS X loaded. My guess is you either remember things a little wrong, or the issue really isn't one related to firmware at all.

boot while holding the power button in till you hear a long tone - then let go and let it continue updating your firmware,,

good luck

My problem is solved now. I rebooted and held the power button down until the tone went off and the firmware installer kicked in and ran fine. I had been letting go of the button as soon as I heard the tone and the firmware installer didn't run.

Thanks anyway.
