I just purchased an Other World Computing processor upgrade and it will be arriving tomorrow. I was reading about the upgrade on xlr8yourmac.com and it is recommended that the firmware be updated before this upgrade is attempted. I went to Apple's web site and found that the firmware upgrade is only usable through OS 9.x.
I've been running Panther (no OS 9.x installed) on this computer without issue. How do I find out it's current version of firmware? If it isn't the latest version of firmware, how do I install it without OS 9.x?
Thanks,
lw

You must have OS9 installed on hard drive running from the system's ATA bus.
Sorry dude. It sucks, I know.
EDIT:
As for finding your current version:
Apple>About this mac>More info>Hardware Overview>Boot ROM info.
4.18f1 or 4.18 is the latest.
EDIT #2:
And I would highly recommend you update the firmware prior to installing the new processor. I have performed, to date, 11 processor upgrades, and the 2 without the 4.18 firmware ended up, well, not so pretty.

That does make it very tricky. Could I add a second hard drive containing OS 9.X and boot up off of it to upgrade the firmware?
thanks,
lw

You can do that, if your ATA bus has an empty position.
But just take a working System Folder, rename it something else, and copy it to your OSX HD. Select it in Startup Disk prefpane and boot into it for the update.
OS9 isn't going to virus your OSX disk. Really.

Unless he formatted his current OSX disk as UFS...
