I have a Western Digital 200GB hard drive that is normally in an external enclosure. When it is mounted if I try to open Disk utility I get an error;

"Error starting Disk Utility background process

Disk Utility started, but a background process needed is Disk Utility didn't start properly. Plaease quit and restart Disk utility"

There is a button to quit but it does not work I have to force quit. This happens everytime that I try. I get the same when it is connected to both my machines. (see sig) I tried to install Panher on to the Hard Drive and everytime it froze. So I took it out of the enclosure and put it in a G4 and tried it in that as a internal drive. I got the same outcome. Now I am not sure about this but I think it is also loseing data as some of the folders that are in it are empty and they should not be. This may be a problem from when I transfered the data to the drive. Any help with this issue would be appreciated thanks

Disk Warrior is your friend. Let it take a crack at the odd HD. TechTool Pro will work also.

If you have access to a PowerMac that can boot OS9, then let DiskFirstAid take a look at the drive while it is installed internally.

I have not heard anything good or bad about Norton in quite a while, but it might work too.

The WD200 is a relatively new drive, a hardware failure is unlikely. It sounds like something is wrong with the directory structure or the partition map. But just to be sure, check your drive jumpers. The jumpers may need to be in different positions if the drive is in the FireWire case vs if the drive is on an internal bus. Check the manual for the FireWire case, and the manual for your system for required jumper positions.

Ditto.
DiskWarrior is one great piece of software.

I had checked the jumpers and they were correct. I tried to use Disk Warrior and it just get hung up on step 8, so i tried Drive 10 it froze. I contacted the person that I bought it from and I am getting a full refund. So now I ask what brand of HD do you suggest to throw in a G5 it must be SATA and 200GB or up Thanks

Wait, it rather seems to be a problem that can be solved be reinitializing your hd, I don't think you need a replacement.

Backup all important data if you can. (As much as you can.)

Reinitialize you hd when reinstalling OS X. Make sure to activate journaling.
