I keep getting Kern Protection Failures in my Dual 1.42 GHz G4 and want to eliminate probable causes. Many of you suggest it could be my RAM. Currently, I have 1GB of Crucial Brand, and the RAM that came with my PowerMac from MacZone.

If I DID have a bad stick, how would I know?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I'll assume that RAM is PC2700.

You don't have access to a PC, do you?

If you do, I'd suggest sticking the memory into a PC and running the Sandra memory test on it, as well as Prime95 and memtest86.

Otherwise, you could just run the G4 on each stick of RAM one by one and see if you can re-create the errors.

Wouldn't it be easier to just remove a chip and see whether the kernel panics go away? Or to use the Hardware Test CD that came with the G4? I'm not a hardware expert--just want to learn.

TechTool Pro has detailed RAM tests that can pinpoint a bad stick.
