Without getting into the who, where and why...

We have received confirmation that the following products will be introduced and/or updated at this upcoming MWSF '04:

NEW Powermac G5 configurations:
Uni III motherboard
DDR400 Ram

New Processors and bus:

Single 2.0 / 1.0 GHz
Dual 2.2 / 1.1 GHz per processor
Dual 2.6 / 1.3 GHz per processor

Things that have not changed:
AGP 8X
2 Serial ATA drives
Same port complement (USB 2.0, FW400/800, etc...)

Optical audio issues have been resolved, USB static issues have been resolved, and the fan subsystem runs even quieter than before.

The single 2.0 will come at the same price-point as today's 1.6. The dual 2.2 will come at the same price-point as today's dual 1.8, but the dual 2.6 will come in at a higher price-point than the current top of the line dual 2.0 (aaproximately $400 more). I don't think too many folks will mind, because this machine is the most impressive desktop workstation ever, on either platform.

The Dual 2.6 will ship in the first week of February, the other two machines will ship immediately.

New Apple displays (new enclosure):

20 inch
23 inch
30 inch

Pricing on the displays was not revealed.

New G5 Xserve:
Although we were previously told the enclosure would be 3U, we are now being told the enclosure will be 2U. Dual 2.6 will be the top-of-the-line configuration.

new iLife Application:
Apple will release a new consumer music editing application, and it will NOT be called iMusic. We have the new name, which is very cool, but we will not disclose it.

More info:
New iPods: We cannot confirm or deny the existence of the lower priced iPods.

This is shaping up to be the another great Macworld!

The Umi thing is them probably screwing up the lingo. I'm going to venture a guess and say they mean UMA-3 and UMA-4. UMA stands for Universal Motherboard Architecture. Apple first started this back in 2000 and thought that it would ease on design and production costs to have a similar motherboard to use across all computers they sold. For the most part, it's a clever idea, but now it's puzzling to how it'll work. Namely the fact that the G5 is such a radically different chip than the G4, that would necessitate a very different motherboard for the G5 than G4. So how Apple plans on making a new UMA design with two radically different chips in their product line is beyond me.

This may have a lot of truth it in, but I fail to see any credence in the details.

Okay....usb noise, audio noise is fixed in this rev.

What about those who already have the G5s? Are we all screwed by Apple on this?

i think a $400 increase on the top end is a bit steep and doesn't look very good perception-wise - that being that "mac's are too expensive." any more than $3199 for the top of the line and they are really pushing it....and even at that they are....that $3000 barrier shouldn't be broken (at least for a "stock" configuration).

Right.. shouldn't be a price increase.

1.3Ghz bus speed... my G4 speed alone is just 1.25Ghz... lol

If one year ago today we had been told that the PowerMacs would be where they are, we'd have said those were very good prices.

...and at that point Intel was already selling their 3.08ghz hyperthreaded P4. And still I know we'd have been amazed at where Apple would end up in 12 months.

It's not like our machines will magically become slower if Apple releases faster ones

Word. Be happy.

I am. I have the original top-o-da-line 64-bit Macintosh.

I'll be happy for a long time.

I am not talking about the speed. I am only talking about whether Apple will provide fix to the audio noise problem to the existing G5 owners....

Leonis: what is the "audio problem"?

I have optical out running to my Z680's and haven't noticed anything abnormal except an ambient hiss, which is from the system itself.

Many G5 users notice some buzzing, "click", "radio interference like" noise out from the speaker and headphone.

I do have some "radio interference like" noise happening on mine once a while.

Same to others with the firewire audio equipments hooked to the G5s. They all say there no such problems with G4s.

Uni-III refers to the the northbridge chip. My MDD G4 uses 2.something, the G5 uses 3.something.

I'm most interested in the Xserve. We are looking to fill out a cluster at work, and for some of our numerical appliations, the 2 GHz G5 is faster than a 3 GHz Xeon, but I'm not sure how much is alivec, memory speed and bandwidth, or what.

I am starting to get into video editing. Nothing major, but more tasking than I want to pu my tibook 800 thru, plus I need/want a superdrive. Do you think the aforementioned single 2 gig is a good option or will I wish I had a dual processor? I also do some still phototagraphy and other mundane task... spreadsheets, internet, word processing... What do you recommend looking for?
Tibook 800dvi 40gig, 1 gig RAM
iMac 24" 2.16 C2d, 250G, 1gig RAM
