There's no way to connect a Apple 17" ADC (CRT) display to a Radeon 9800 (rtl), then?

I think this is in the right place.

Here's the deal. I'm really curious as to whether there is any chance at all that an Apple Studio Display 17" ADC (CRT version) could connect to a Radeon 9800. I've read the Dr. Bott DVIator FAQ, and it says I can't because the 17" ADC CRT model accepts an analog signal from the ADC connector, and the Bott thing only sends digital (I'm pretty sure that's what it said, or something similar). The Apple adapter piece lists all of the LCD studio displays as supported, but doesn't specifically say that my model is not supported. So I'd really like to know. If anyone has any knowledge on the subject, or experience, let me know! Thanks.

Damn you, ATI. Couldn't you have stuck an ADC port on the 9800? Damn you, Apple. Couldn't you just stick with VGA or DVI?

Honestly, is it that big a loss? You could buy a brand new VGA 17" CRT with the same tube (flat DiamondTron) for little more than the cost of the DVI->ADC adapter.

Or you could take this as a reason to upgrade to a flat panel display.

Upgrading's great when you have the money for it. But I'm on the verge of being penniless as it is, and I'm also not a big fan of LCDs. And I would prefer this monitor over a brand new cheesy 17" VGA CRT.

Normally now a big deal, I suppose, for some, but right now, it's important in my current situation. I'll live if it won't work, of course.

While we're on the subject of cheap and cheesy VGA CRTs, pretty much any CRT will work as long as the resolutions match up with the graphics card's output resolutions, correct?

I think a good point to make is that Apple basically left the few ADC CRT customers in the cold as far as supporting this display on future/newer video cards.

The move to LCDs has left this single display to be only used with original hardware and that sucks.

Thanks Apple.

This is the feeling I got last night. Ah well. Lame, but what can ya do? I know my ADC CRT will work with a Radeon 9000 at least, right? Now I'm worried about the different signals (analog, digital).

Still, if someone knows of a possible way, let me know.

The guy has a point. You, typically, don't.

I also have one of these fine pieces of hardware, and I'm fortunate to have upgraded to a Radeon 9000, which I believe is the last card I can use on this computer (Dual 533) that will work with this display. The reason being that the CRT has higher power demands than an LCD, and that the power must be fed through the video card.

Seeing as Apple has totally shifted away from CRTs, they've obviously adjusted their specs so that video cards that are made for macs don't have to have such high power output.

Well, the 9000 would just a tad faster for games than my current GF3, but have you had any problems with your ADC CRT not working with the 9000 on occasion, misanthrope? I've read a review from someone who said that the ADC CRT worked "sporadically at best," so it got me paranoid.

Works like a charm (other than the terrible electrical wiring in this apartment which prevents use of higher resolutions. this also happened with the older GF4MX)

I wasn't suggesting a "cheap and cheesy" CRT, what I had in mind was something high quality, using (a newer version of) the same tube in your Apple display.

I wasn't talking about some Wal-Mart special!

"With a 17" CRT, there can only be cheese and Wal-Mart specials," as the old saying goes.

I just made that up. It's cool, anyhow. I decided against the hassle of a 9800 and am going with the 9000. Besides, I'd rather save up for a 22" LaCie, baby!

I'm running a 21" Apple Studio Display CRT and a 17" Micron CRT from my 9800 pro, no problems.

But we're talking about the ADC CRT. Cool, though. Thanks.
