My dual 1.8 G5 keeps crashing randomly. I have no ram added.

Clean installed it and ran hardware test and still to results.

Could it be due to power fluctuations on my electric line? SHould I get a power regulator? Should I send it backt to Apple?

thank you!

Do you have any peripherals attached to the system besides the display and speakers? Also, if you have any 3rd-party memory that you were hoping to install, did you try swapping that in place of the stock memory (assuming that you bought your memory in pairs)?

If there aren't any peripherals and you don't have 3rd-party memory yet (or you do and it doesn't change anything), I would just bite the bullet and contact Apple.

The problem is I'm using the exact set of peripherals I've been using with my past computer (G4). So I don't see why they would cause problems.

It's very hard to verify what is causiing the problem because the crashes are not frequent they can happen once in 3 days or twice in a day!

I really want to know if power fluctuations could affect the computer like this.

The heat sensor on the G5 HD bays was giving this guy over at xlr8yourmac.com some problems similar to what you are describing. Check out this
Might help you out....

if it's the logs in the console program, I have barely any. The few that I have are irrelevent really.

I didn't get any kernel panic, just a freeze. The cursor still moves but I can't click anywhere. I sometimes get a spinning beach ball.

That happens to me when I take off the air deflector in the case. Do you have it on? Do you have the side panel off the case?

The side panel is on. My computer does not crash when I remove the side panel.

If that's the case, seriously look at that thing over at xlr8yourmac.com I posted earlier in the thread. It sounds like the hard drives are overheating. Touch the top of the drives, I bet they are super hot. (right after you take the door off)

Bi@tch, I would revert back to the Apple mouse just for grins. Have you installed the MS drivers or are you using the os x out of the box drivers? Also, how much ram do you have in the machine? If you aren't ready to call apple at this stage (which I would probably be getting ready to do), I would start yanking hardware to try and find where the fault is. I would take the ram down to the minimum, if you have 2 hard drives unplug the one that is just for data, lose the mouse, and after all that if it still crashes, get apple on the phone (if you haven't all ready)...

Sorry to hear you are having so many issues. Such a kick @ss machine to have problems right out of the box just bl0ws.....

I would also try and claim the machine as DOA if possible...having to get the machine reapired may be more trouble than it's worth given how the hardware tests are coming up w/ no culprit to point a finger at....

I've had it for a month so DOA is a little too late.

I have the noisy PMU problem also. Might this be the cause. I'll get Apple to repair it for sure.

I called Apple and they gave me a case number. I'm sending the computer in on Thursday probably.

For those crashes...I bought a Power Regulator see if it fixes anything. If not I'll take it back to Futur Shop.

I wonder if the heat issue could also be affecting a B/W G3 that I have that also randomly freezes. All system tests and hardware tests I have run indicate that I have no failing components, yet I have system hangs and complete freezes routinely.

Hmmmmm...

I haven't had any freezes for the past 3 days. Maybe the power regulator is really the solution.
