hello

my G5 refuses to go to sleep as scheduled - once the time alloted in the energy saver prefs panel has elapsed without any use, the monitor (apple lcd) goes off but the fan and hard drive stay on. i have corrected permissions etc but the problem remains - has anyone else experienced this or does anyone know of a fix? i'm not happy about leaving the machine running all the time like this - although i can set it to sleep manually via the apple menu i usually forget

cheers

What are the exact settings on your energy saver prefpanel?

it's set to sleep after 10 mins inactivity ('sleep hard drive when possible' box is unticked, as is 'separate sleep for display')

it's driving me mad. i had the same problem with my emac months ago but it went away after a few .x updates to Jaguar.

Two things: What external devices do you have connected? Please give manufacturer and device type. And do you use the automatic startup feature that can be set in the preferences for energy saver?

Iomega 100mb Zip (USB, goes into keyboard port)
Lacie 60gb FW400 external HD
Canon Lide30 scanner (USB, goes into back of monitor)
Palm Pilot M105 dock (the ball-shaped one) serial-USB converter (USB, goes into back of monitor)
Macally RF mouse (USB receiver goes into back of G5)
5GB iPod (occasionaly connected - goes into the spare port on the external hard drive)

a peripheral cause was my first suspicion, problem, however i've been running this same rig of peripherals for about 6 months, first on my eMac, then on my G5, without this problem happening.

in answer to your second question, do you mean 'reset automatically after a power failure'? if so, this box isn't ticked, although surely this wouldn't affect sleep schedules?

thanks for your help.

Have you recently updated any of the drivers for these peripherals?

If you go into the peferences and access the energy saver you will see an item that says schedule. This allows you to automatically start up and shutdown your computer. I have noticed that when you use this feature my machine would not sleep.

ok, i see. no, i'm not using the scheduler, or any new drivers for my peripherals.

there are some long threads over on the apple boards regarding this problem; my best guess so far is that it's 10.3.2 related. [what a poxy update that was ] i thought it might be worth seeing if anyone over here had cracked it...

I have a different sleep issue, it has only happened twice since September, but I fear this problem could get worse. My G5 wont wake from sleep. I try to wake it and nothing happens. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Thanks

It's your Canon scanner software that is causing the problem. Sorry I don't know the proper techie terms, but the scanner software installs software for both the LIDE 20 and LIDE 30. The LIDE 20 program keeps calling out for a scanner that's not there. If you go into \library\CMFSupport, you will see the scanner stuff. Leave "N124U_Library.shlb" and "N124U_ButtonManager" in there and delete its two cousins, which have similar names but different numbers (not 124, but something else). Once you delete those two files, you should sleep just fine (assuming there aren't other peripherals with problems).

DAMN!

thanks for your help, as soon as i read your suggestion i thought it sounded very likely, but unfortunately it turns out that it wasn't the problem. G5 still refuses to sleep - when it didn't i even tried disconnecting the scanner and Palm cable to take them out of the equation entirely. still no sleep.

i'm still in my 90 day free support period, so i think i'll get on the phone to apple tomorrow and let someone there stress over it for a while!

I had this problem with my 1.25ghz G4 PM. Turns out it was the Kensington Pocket Pro wireless mouse. Kensington said it was a known issue and that Kensington was working on it. Thus it's quite likely to be one of your peripherals......

i have a wireless mouse too, a macally one. but i've been using it for ages on three different machines (eMac, MDD G4, G5) with no problems. i called apple support today and went through everything with them, disconnected network and all peripherals (including the mouse), ran fsck, trashed sleep prefs, reset PRAM, still the problem remains. they've now told me to try archive/installing to 10.3.0 and if the problem still exists after that, they'll take it back as a hardware issue. seems a hideous amount of hassle to have to go to but i don't want this problem for the life of the machine.

Sure seems likely to be a peripheral issue (or its pref files. Disconnecting all the peripherals and test-driving is a place to start but does not help if it's got some carelessly designed software onboard your mac.

Might it be informative to open the "Activity Monitor" system utility and look at what's staying active that maybe shouldn't be?
