i have a slot loading imac dv 400mhz. i'm hoping to sell it soon and would like to have the machine in the best possible condition before doing so.

my first problem is one of asthetics. i've had this machine for several years now and the case has collected dirt, specifically around/inside the seams of plastic where i can't just wipe it down. it looks like the case just locks together with plastic tabs and would not be too hard to disassemble but i wasn't sure if any was sealed with glue or where i should start disassembling or even if this is not a good idea for some reason. hopefully someone can give me a little guidance on this.

the second issue is one of functionality. the cd/dvd drive has been getting progressively worse since maybe a year after i got this machine. at first there were a couple of cds it wouldn't read, would just spit them right back out. then i came across a couple it would just get stuck on and i'd have to wait a good bit for it to error and eject or just restart the machine. sometimes after restarting the machine, the cd would then read fine, sometimes it would immediately eject it. as time went on, more and more cds were a problem for the machine, and within the past year, i've had problems with it ejecting a cd (only comes out maybe a quarter of the way), as well as having errors when pulling data off of most discs it loads, and it always sounds like it's having a hard time reading discs. needless to say, this has made os upgrades difficult and quite stressful, and is not a problem i want to sell to anyone else (and cannot afford to either). my guesses are that maybe the drive is just dirty, maybe something is unbalanced, maybe the lense needs to be readjusted, or maybe the drive is just failing, but i have no idea which if any of these it is. any help with troubleshooting the problem and self repairing would be much appreciated.

thanks,
-dot

well, i can't help you with the dirt thing.....but CD-ROM issue can be easy to fix/replaced. eBay generally has a lot of slot loading CD-ROM drives for sale...fairly cheaply to. I also have one i could sell you, if you are interested...
