I have a DP 1.25 (not FW 800) machine and was wondering if it would handle the 4x media I just purchased (didn't have 2x). Tried a search but couldn't dig anything up... Any ideas?

It will handle it, but it won't burn any faster than 2X, so it's useless to spend more for discs that are capable of burning faster.
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

It was the same price as the 2x media so it really didn't matter. I just wanted to the bulk pack rather than the pack with jewel cases.

You might want to check that the firmware on your superdrive is up to date (assuming that your superdrive is a Pioneer model). There were some issues previously with the lasers in the Pioneer A03/103 and A04/104 drives burning out when trying to burn to 4x media.

Most 2x drives will write to 4x media, but only at 1x.

Okay here is the official info:
Apple's Take on this...

Which Macintosh computers require this update?

The following SuperDrive-equipped computers may require this update (see below for information on how to determine if your computer needs this update):
iMac (Flat Panel) with SuperDrive
Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio) with SuperDrive
Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver) with SuperDrive
Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) with SuperDrive
The following SuperDrive-equipped computers include the latest update. They can read from and write to high-speed media. (No update is needed):
iMac (17-inch Flat Panel)
eMac with SuperDrive
Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) with SuperDrive
PowerBook G4 (1GHz/867MHz) with SuperDrive
All Macs with SuperDrive being manufactured as of late 2002 can read from and write to high-speed media, and do not need to be updated.
For computers that require the update, you can automatically update the SuperDrive via the automatic Software Update feature (for both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X) to work with high-speed media.
If you have turned off automatic Software Update, or if you have an environment that doesn't allow automatic Software Update to work, you can download a manual update from Apple's website (see installation instructions below).
Computers that do not have a SuperDrive, or that have a SuperDrive from a vendor other than Pioneer do not need to be updated.

Only if it's a Pioneer. (And yeah, make sure you do the firmware update first.)

Why does it do it only at 1x? Why can't it do it at 2x?
