I've got a dual 1.25 MDD G4 with 768MB RAM and 2 HDs - both are Segate 120GB/8MB 7200rpm.

I'm running OS 10.2.8 and the machine runs fine except that I have recently noticed the HD running the OS will pause and give me the spinning beachball for a fairly long time (maybe 5-10 seconds) whenever I ask, for example, to save a file I have been working on - usually in Photoshop. It's gotten to be quite annoying and is happening on a more frequent basis. It's almost as if the HD has gone to sleep as I can hear the HD click "on" after the 10 sec wait and then (apparently?) rev back up to perform the requested task.

Does anyone have any ideas on what is happening and how I might fix these annoying pauses? I repair permissions religiously - is there something else I should be doing or checking for?

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom...

Do you have the hard drive set to never sleep?

Yes, check to make sure you dont have the drives set to spin down in the System Preferences under Energy Saver.

I did my first re-install of OS X in over a year about a week or so ago, and I did it on a brand new hard drive. I experienced the same thing you are experienceing and I was started to worry that my brand new HD was going bye-bye (I already had reason to suspect that anyways because the drive was exceptionally loud). Then it occured to me that Energy Saver sets the HDs to spin down mode by default.

I have multiple HDs in my MDD.

Try install CHUD Tool. Inside there is a little app calls "SpindownHD". It allows users to set, enable/disable the hard drive sleep time.

I believe that you need xCode installed first.

Thanks everyone. I indeed had the preferences set for the HD to sleep when possible. It's now performing much more smoothly for me.

Prolonged spin up time could still be a sign of a dying hard drive. Does it ever "click" on a bunch of times before actually spinning up? OR is the click more of a thump? I have the same computer, and I added one 80 GB drive in addition to the 80 that came with it, and I set them up as a striped raid, set never to sleep, and it has ran great since i got it. Very fast.
