I bought a used cube half a year ago and upgraded the stock drive to a 80gig Seagate Barracuda. Speed increase and everything was great! I even installed a very silent base fan, since the Radeon fan was loud anyway. Last month, my harddrive crashed with a noise like a screwdriver hitting a fan! According to the store, he has not seen a drive dead like that in a while, especially not a Seagate.

I had just made a backup of the biggest part of my user folder to my iBook, so I hardly lost anything. The store replaced the drive without a problem, I got an 120gig 8mb drive now, but after the crash I am a little worried as to the possibility of that kind of thing happening again. Could this be in any way related to the design of the cube, the way the drive is mounted? Or am I getting superstitious here?

I doubt it is a problem with the Cube. You just got a bad hard drive, which does happen.

No, this definitely sounds like a faulty hd. If you still have warranty on it, get it replaced by Samsung.

Thanks for your help! I am slowly regaining trust in my HDD.

And as I said above, the store replaced the Barracuda without any problems after it died within the warranty.

Heat is higher in a Cube than in a regular PowerMac. You can expect components to have a shorter life in a Cube. Still aHD should last several years problem free.

That's why I installed the base fan. The temperature never goes above 97 degrees according to ThermoInDock (although it might be a little higher actually since at startup I get a reading of 60 degrees while temperature in my room is hopefully higher, more like 75)

So I hope this might help the components have a somewhat longer lifetime.

degrees ... Fahrenheit, I hope. 97 °C would be really alarming

And I was beginning to wonder where all these Scandinavian guys with the towels looking for a sauna came from!

And yes, I was talking about degrees fahrenheit. Celsius in these ranges would be slightly uncomfortable, or I could use my cube to heat my apartment - which would not be so bad an idea with all the snow and cold temperatures right now...
