So I've been having problems with my superdrive, and today, when i'm cleaning up the cables from my Radeon 9800 Pro install, I notice a 1/4" slit in the ribbon cable, where one of the threads is gone. Entirely.
I'd post a pic, but my digicam is out at olympus right now for repair. it's about 1" up from the plug that plugs into the motherboard, about 4 or 5 wires over from the left side if looking at the back of the plug.
Please tell me this isn't normal.
Cheers,
Kris Olson

There's a piece of a single thread in the cable totally missing?
Can you look at it closer for any signs of burning? I once had that happen to a ribbon cable, a piece of it just turned to ash. Bizarre indeed.

Umm -- that would be called a "Cable Select IDE Cable"
I think Apple has been using them for some time - I know my Power Mac MDD uses them. It's normal for a CS cable to have that "notch" in it to determine on the chain which device is master and which is slave.
