I am trying to connect an Apple Plaintalk mic to my G5's audio line in port, but it doesn't seem to fit. This same mic worked in my G4 with no problem. Any advice?

The Apple PlainTalk microphone is not compatible with the line in port on the PowerMac G5. The PlainTalk microphone used a longer than usual plug, and the G5 does not support this.

If you wish to record some sound, you should connect some equipment that produces a line-level output to the input of the G5. Most microphones do not meet this requirement -- they do not produce line-level output.

For some reason that I've never been able to grasp, Apple refuse to include audio-in ports that work. By which I mean, you plug in a standard microphone, (hell, even a pair of headphones) you can record sound with it. This has worked on every PC I've ever used, but instead of providing the port with that little bit of juice it requires to power the microphone, Apple insist on making you buy a microphone with its own power supply. Which sucks monkey balls.

Did I just make that all up based on nothing more than my deluded observations and zero research? I did.
