OK... here we go again.
My buddy bought a G4 from a friend of his. It had OS 9 and 10 on it and a dvd player that didn't work.
I reformatted the drive. Installed OS 9. Ran software update. Installed firmware update 4.something (I don't have the machine here otherwise I'd give you the info). Then I installed Panther and ran the software updates etc. The machine works fine, it has 1.152G of RAM, ATI Rage 128 and a DVD Player with Revision 1A30.
I didn't test the DVD player (cuz I didnt have any dvds) but assumed that updating the firmware would fix the problem (yes, I made an ASS out of myself for assuming). Well we're back at work and apparently it still doesn't work. He gets the message:
Apple DVD Player cannot open because the required hardware is not found
I used to get that message on my old-ass powerbook g3 series and I never fixed the problem cuz I didn't have os 9 on it.
ANYWAY... If any of you geniuses know what the hell is up, lemm know.
Arigato gozaimasu!!

Well, IIRC, OS 9 uses hardware DVD decoding. Your Rage 128 may not have hardware DVD decoding capability. I recall having the same problem with the Rage 128 in my Power Mac G3.
As for the OS X problem, I don't know. Are you sure you have a DVD-ROM and not a DVD-RAM drive?

well, I know that the ATI Rage 128 doesn't have a "daughter" card that I think maybe some other computers had. It's a DVD-ROM by Matsushita and it came with the machine so I assume the video card is capable of playing DVDs... As far as viewing DVDs in OS9 I don't care... As long as you can watch them either in 9 or 10...

nope, the AGP G4's (like my sawtooth) never used hardware decoding like the G3's unless it was a Yikes G4. do you have an AGP slot in that machine, or a regular PCI slot for the graphics card?
also, is he getting that error in 9 or X? i was kinda confused on that part.

the video card is in an AGP slot.
the problem comes up in OS 10, I don't think he really uses 9 anymore I just installed 9 because I wanted to run the firmware update.

Try reinstalling DVD Player or trashing any preferences it might have created. It's also possible to try a different monitor resolution.
I've seen this problem before but forgotten how to correct it.
