Hi, I'm setting up my G4 450 as a server. I'd like to be able to play movies out to my tv, which would need svideo. The graphics card at the moment only has vga and apple outputs.

I'd like to either get a card to replace it, or a second card just for the video out. Any suggestions. I'm not a gamer so don't need the latest stuff, just a cheap card that will output video ok.

Thanks,

J.

I'd consider not doing it. The cheapest possible DVD player (about $40) will play DVD's much better than any video card with S-video out and cost a lot less.

Most of the OEM Apple cards can display to SVIDEO with an adapter from Apple. You could try to get one of those.

Ah, I have a standalone dvd player, this is for playing downloaded avi's of tv series. DVD player won't work for that.

Cheers,

The Radeon 7000 has S-video out,
They usually go for about $110 new or $50-60 used on ebay....

I thought that was going to be the cheapest option until I read the specs on the card,

The ATI Rage 128 Pro AGP video card provides a DVI and VGA video connector. The DVI connector follows the DVI-D standard and supports only digital displays. Customers needing to connect standard VGA displays can use the 15 pin VGA connector.

The DVI standard allows manufacturers to incorporate VGA signals into the DVI port. This variation of DVI is called DVI-I. The DVI-D and DVI-I connectors appear identical except for a single connector 'key'. The key on DVI-I connectors forms a plus (+) sign, while on DVI-D connectors it forms a minus (-) sign.

The ATI Rage 128 Pro card supports one display at a time. The DVI and VGA ports cannot be used simultaneously.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to go that route, so I'll have to look for a new card.

Cheers,

J

I got the Radeon 7000 retail (about $110) as a second card for my tower about 4 months ago for the same reason. I don't remember how I decided on it, but I'm confident I weighed all the options and made the right decision

as a bonus it gives me a second VGA output (and it came with an adapter for a 3rd if I should want that)
