anyone?

seems most places I've looked at thus far only stock the fast ATA units now. Any suggestions of vendors with an actual inventory of these older units?

I assume by "internal drive" you mean hard drive.

Is there any reason why you want an ATA66 drive? Any ATA100 or ATA133 drive will work perfectly fine on an ATA66 bus. (There are some restrictions on drive size, but I won't get into that here.)

yes internal HD, curiously, APS Tech claims their ATA/100 drive WILL NOT work on the AGP G4 PowerMac.

Let me guess: it's a drive larger than 120GB?

That's the largest size (well, 128GB to be precise) IDE drive that you can use in any Mac before the MDD G4. (This limitation is independent of the speed of the controller, by the way.)

Any ATA/66, ATA/100 or ATA/133 hard drive that has an advertised capacity of 137 GB or less will work on an ATA/66 bus.

no, it's a 80 GB ATA/100, I'll call their tech support line to sort this out.

Just order this.

There is no tech support involved with this. Any IDE drive, regardless of the ATA speed, that is under 137GBs, will work fine in your machine. There is no question. Anybody that tells you that an ATA/100 or 133 drive wont work is either lying or stupid.

Also, APS Tech is overcharging for that 80GB drive as you may have noticed, and I doubt they are as reliable of a reseller as NewEgg. They also are not including a high-quality pen for free with the drive like NewEgg is. And shipping is free from NewEgg.

I take it you like NewEgg?

(I do too...they are hands down the best out there.)

Also, for equipment like hard drives or memory, don't buy stuff that's advertised as "made for Mac". It's just a way of ripping off Mac users.

You gotta look around. As I recall, you typically get free t-shirts with motherboards. It depends on how many they have left in stock. If they run out of t-shirts they'll usually substitute with a pen, or a NewEgg baseball cap. I have yet to get the cap, but I have gotten two of the pens and they are very high quality. Easily worth the money they cost if you were to buy one seperately. The even come in a very nice 'NewEgg' embroidered box with custom fitted styrofoam inside to hold the pen. Very much like a bracelet box or something. Quite 'wicked' for being free.

Anyways, the t-shirts are great. High quality Fruit of the Loom, nice and soft... very geeky. Not too good when it comes to attracting the ladies though...

If I'd been drinking something when I read that, it would have been a spit-take: APS was one of the oldest and most respected Mac drive companies, they are absolutely top notch. Note the past tense there -- APS is now owned by LaCie, so APS's old enclosure styles are long gone. But LaCie is a great company, too.

That said, I agree that APS's markup is unnecessary -- just shop around at CompUSA and Best Buy and find a drive on sale.

That may be true, but NewEgg is pretty much... god. So I stand behind my statement.

I would agree. Also, you can get the same product at or better than CompUSA or Best Buy's sale price, without the hassle of all those rebates...

My first CD-burner is made by APS (Sanyo mechanism) back in 2001. SCSI based, however, the price was like $300.
