Hi - could anyone help me with this mystery please?
I have one of the original bondi blue imac's manufactured in 1997. It was currently running happily on os8.6. Yesterday I decided to check it's health with Norton Utilities as it had been running very slowly and kept saying it was out of memory. I started it up on the Norton cd and did a health check - came back as all good. Then the problems started, as I tried to restart, the imac behaved as if I had the C button pressed and started up again on the Norton cd. I shut down, ejected the cd with the paperclip and switched on again. This time I got the question mark at the beginning and there it stayed. I put the Norton cd back and started the imac off it once more to do another health check. To my surprise, the cd could not find the hard drive in order to check it. I then decided to do a clean install, started the imac off the OS8.5 cd and then to my horror found that the cd could not find a hard-drive on which to install itself. All the cd could find was itself.
Please could anyone help me? I am completely lost as to what to do next.
Thanks
Ania

The first thing I'd try is zapping the PRAM. Hold down Command+Option+P+R at startup until you hear the second chime. If this doesn't work, hold Command+Option+O+F at startup to get into OpenFirmware. Then type reset-nvram and press enter, then type reset-all. This information is coming from this Apple document.

If none of that works, boot from the OS 8.5 CD and launch Drive Setup from the CD. See if the program lists your hard drive. If so, you may have to initialize (also called format) your hard drive in order to get the Mac to recognize it again. You'll lose all the contents of your hard drive if you do this.

Before you format, try to get ahold of a DiskWarrior CD and see if that program can get your hard drive in order when booted from the CD. Unless you have nothing important on your drive and don't care if all is lost.

Thanks for your advice. The drive setup thing finally worked and I reinstalled. Although I've lost my work, I still have a working computer and that means the world to me. Thanks for all your help.
