What do you guys reckon is the minimum RAM I could get away with on an eMac for the following tasks:

Safari.
Mail.
Preview.

Will the standard 128 work OK or do I really need to be speccing 256?

(this is for parents' new Internet machine)

Thanks guys.

If that really is all the mac will be used for, then 128mb is fine. But ram is so cheap now, there is no real excuse for not bumping it up a bit. 512+mb will be much better.
Got 1gig it mine, it's quite zippy
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

For basic stuff, 128 is just fine, but as soon as two or more apps are running together things get a little slowed down as virtual memory is used.

Do just as proposed, get some cheap ram stick (256 mb should be enough for your purposes) and upgrade it yourself. check http://www.dealram.com or similar for prices. Buying ram at apple is horribly overpriced IMHO.

OK thanks guys.

I'm gonna spec them with a little higher than standard, maybe a 512 - just in case.

Just running Safari has pushed my RAM usage to over 300MB. That said, VRAM will work. But with 128MB of RAM, the machine will creep along. 384MB or up is what I'd recommend.

128 MB is crap for OS X.

-Because it would be using so much virtual memory with 128 MB in, it really wears out your Hard Drive's logical life, and will "crash" your HD faster. I've also seen eMac's hard freeze like the old days with only 128 in there. Go for at least 256 to give it some breathing room. OS X is a little claustrophobic.
