Can I get my old iMac to work faster and better?
I've had to dust it off and resort to using it again, but it's like going backwards.
Here's the info:
iMac 333mhz 32mb/6gb/24x/56k . . .it also came with free 64mb ram so I think I have 96mb of ram.
OS 8.6
I can't use DSL or my HP 6110 printer. Guess because I don't have OS 9.1 or higher, right?
So what do I need to do? Should I install 9, 9.1, 9.2 or X.? I'm not very technically savvy and I don't want to spend alot as this is only a temporary measure because I can't stand the loud humming on this machine and the skittsh mouse and a few other things.
Is it a big deal to do an upgrade and is this what I need to do get back on my DSL?
Will appreciate all input and advice.
Thanks,
ClaraT

Hi Clara. You should be able to use your DSL connection with your iMac, providing your DSL modem connects to the computer with an ethernet port and not a USB port.
If it's a USB modem (unlikely), hope they have Macintosh drivers. If it's an ethernet modem, you might need special software (MacPoET or EnterNet), but most likely you just need to configure the TCP/IP control panel correctly. Let us know what kind of DSL modem you have, and what Internet company you're with.
As far as software goes, I'd just stick with 8.6 if you only want to use the machine for backup. It's not worth buying 9 or X just for occasional use. With 96 MB RAM, you'll definitely want to stay away from X, 8.6 is more suited to that amount of RAM.

I second what bradoesch says but I think that if you dropped $20 to buy either a 64mb or 128mb stick it would be a worth while investment.

Well, I have had a lot of expericence with this model. You should definately be able to get in on your dsl line. First thing I would do is run the software updater and download any updates I could get. I think 96MB is going to be fine especially if you stick with 8.6. As for that, I like 9.2.2, but I agree with bradoesch as well don't spend the money if you don't need to, but if you can get a copy, update to 9.2.2 and a little more ram would not hurt, but will run ok with out it. Do not spend a lot of money on this machine, it was made to OS 8.5.1 - 9.2.2 and it does that really well. My employers are running 233iMac's happily for word and excel 98, internet explorer/netscape, outlook express. Most of these machince have 96MB of ram and run just fine.

Hi you guys.
I've been offline a few days and wanted to thank you for the great help. I've got my DSL on this old clunker and life is good again. . .took a few days to get it going smoothly but what a difference.
Anyway, just wanted you to know how much you helped. My blood pressure is back to normal.
thanks,
ClaraT
