I've always heard good things about Western Digital and haven't had any trouble with them at all.

Did have a minor problem with maxtor in my old beige G3. Never lost any data, but whenever I'd put the machine to sleep, upon awakening I could never get the maxtor drive to spin up. Only thru restarting could I get it to work again.

I have used Western Digital with no problems. I dont know on sata drives though... If seagates are fast and quiet, I would go with them. My western digital 7200 drive has worked flawlessly for the past 4 years. I would say go with the one that is on sale.

I bought a 250 WD from NewEgg.com for $290 I think and it's been fine for 5 months + now. Down to $226 now. Good drive, good price and good reseller.

IBM/HItachi drives fail, Maxtor drives fail, Seagate drives fail, Samsung drives fail, Western Digital drives fail. Right now I'm listening to the death screams of 2 WD drives that I don't feel like replacing at this moment.

Go with any of them. Try and find a drive with a 3 year warranty. And remember to do backups.

What brand is the 160GB included with the G5? My G5 just got delayed *again*, and I won't see it until monday... It's not like delivery time of over a month is frustrating or anything... Noooo...

Western Digital vote here. Awesome, quiet, reliable drives.

I have had just about EVERY maxtor that my mac had either come with or bought on my own fail in less then a year. I got a brand new 120 gig one 2 months ago and yesterday it started to grind. Good thing they have good support!

Dude, their SCSI drives may be quiet, but their SATA drives are freakin' loud.

That said, I have 2 Seagates. I do trust them as a drive manufacturer. Next I'd choose Western Digital.

Maxtor, I don't trust them for some reason. And IBM is not in the picture anymore, thank goodness.

Hard drives are kind of a crap shoot.

We all have our prejudices I guess. Western Digital is at the bottom of my list. Next to the now-defunct Connor, WD has been the most troublesome to me over the years. Since Maxtor is Quantum, and I always had good luck with Quantum, I like them. I've got a Seagate in my G5, and it's fine, if a bit loud.

I have a Maxtor, WD, and Seagate drive. No problems with any of them.

storagereview.com, tomshardware.com, and others have rated Seagate SATAs as the quietest drives around. I'm not saying yours aren't loud, but it's by no means universal. I have two and I never notice them.

I agree with you that reliability is pretty much a crapshoot. I've owned everything but IBMs and never had a problem. I think reliability is so good now overall that you can't go wrong with any make, but each makes the occasional lemon.
