I think he's asking if the current G5 models have been end-of-lifed. Ie. when a current Mac model's SKU is end-of-lifed it is a sign that new models are on the way.

I do not think that any of us would be able to figure that out (as we are not employees of Apple).

I'm sitting here with reps of Apple. They won't comment.

They may become EOLed soon, but I have a feeling some displays might be as of right now.

One thing that may be helpful is to check Small Dog's famous price list, since it's a very detailed listing of what they have and how much it costs.

I haven't been following day-by-day to see what their G5 stocks are like, but they have few models of anything except the single 1.8 (which is obviously languishing due to the Mac nut's aversion to all things single-processor). What I also find interesting is that the 1.8 DP is scheduled to be back in stock "Jan 26..." which is one day off from a Tuesday where a G5 update is strongly rumoured. If I recall, the last generation of PowerMac G4s was introduced right around the same time in 2003.

This would be more incidental than anything if you didn't happen to look at Small Dog's display stocks: they have a few 20" displays, but the 17" and 23" displays are due on the 26th and 28th respectively. It's entirely possible that this is just a regular shipment; wouldn't you want to ship the displays that go with your computers at around the same time? However, given that the G5s are rapidly approaching an anticipated update point (as well as the Mac's 20th anniversary), it's also quite possible that Apple wants to finish updating the look of its pro line at the same time as it raises the bar for performance.

I don't see Apple leaving the G5 at 2Ghz all year then going to 3Ghz in the summer that's a massive jump.

So was the jump from the G4 1.42 to the G5 2.0.

I think Apple has demonstrated that they are no longer worried about making big jumps.

PowerMacMan:

The main reason there was a big jump was because of the difference in architecture. The G5 has a longer pipeline than the G4 and is built on a 130-nanometer process (the G4s at the time were made on a 180-nanometer process), so that wasn't much of a stretch.

Right now, it's the same processor, just on a smaller manufacturing process.
