When inserting a CD recordable disc into your iMac, why doesn't the icon appear on the desktop? How can you get it to show?

open the finder's preferences (under the finder menu) and check the box for CDs and DVDs.

I have the CD box checked and no CD icon appears. Do you have any further suggestion? It is a CD-R disc that I have in-serted, so an icon ought to appear.

Hmm, that is odd, I just checked and after inserting a blank cdr it does infact appear on the desktop.

I am wondering what you have checked in you systems preferences. Have you messed around with the cd dvd panel?

I have checked preferences under Finder and the box to show the icon is checked. Is there any other area I should check?
Do you think it could be a software problem? Or, something
with the hard drive?

If I can get it to appear, then I'll try to transfer pictures from albums in my iPhoto to the CD and burn it. I would appreciate
any help I can get. Thanks much.

Check System Preferences > CDs and DVDs and make sure the option for CDs is set to "Ask what to do" or whatever action you want. It may be set to "Ignore."

Do you know you can burn you CD's right from iPhoto? If you open iPhoto there is a closed burn iris on the bottom right of the program. Are you running Jaguar or Panther for the OS?

Also it looks like you missed what I was saying, I caught the fact that you opened the finder preference, this is different than the system perferences. System preferences can be opened from the Apple Menu. Once open look for the CD and DVD panel as Bunno suggested.

Thanks for your responses on how to obtain a CD-R icon on my desktop. We discovered an error in the system preferences.
Once corrected, I not only obtained an icon but also the burn icon appeared in the lower right corner of iPhoto. I can now transfer
iPhoto pictures from my albums individually or a total album to a
CD-R right in iPhoto.
