My condo building got broken into this afternoon, and 6 units (including mine) were entered. Of the 6, 5 had laptops sitting near their entertainment center since we all share a wireless network and can be anywhere. However, only mine was stolen. The difference? Mine was a an iBook and the rest were Dells and HP's.

Hey, even crooks love Mac's too. Damn! Apple's had great penetration in the "thug market." If anyone sees a Dual-USB iBook for sale (cheap!) in the Chicagoland-area, drop me a line .

Well... That sucks. (I think...)

Atleast you're taking this in a good way rather than... taking a sawed off shot gun, snagging a few hostages in a convenience store and demanding that your iBook be returned before you start firing.

I think he is posting from an internet terminal in the convenience store . I know if my PowerBook were stolen, I would not be in a good mood, or have a good outlook on the situation at all.

That sucks. You have insurance that will cover this, right? And were you using FileVault? I would hate to have someone else have access to all of the data I store on my machine.

Well,
How I'm looking at it is that I'm lucky I wasn't here (and that's because I work from home and am home 95% of the time). They would've come right in on me... as they did with my neighbor, whom was sleeping - and they still walked away with some of his stuff. Hell, he's such a heavy sleeper that it was the Chicago Police who woke him up (hands on guns no less) and asked him for ID to see if he lived there (I thought he made that up, but I asked the officers and they said it was true). Talk about being a heavy sleeper!

In any case; I am really bummed about leaving my Account logged in on the stolen iBook, since I had to spend all night changing Mail/FTP/Website/Telnet passwords (not that they would know what to do - but you never know). And the fact I've got 3 more G3's to continue working doesn't hurt either. Though if they would have taken my desktop B&W I'd really be bummed - time to say hello to off-site Maxtor External HD backups I suppose. Being insured for the iBook helps too.

But the thing I found really interesting is that they completely just LEFT the other laptops behind. I mean, if I'm a crook and I've already taken one - why not the rest? I'm kind of thinking the design was so "unlaptop-like" and "radical" that they must have thought it was some object from the future to be taken and sorted out later.

Maybe they'll be wearing it around their neck... Flava-Flav clock style. Bling Bling.

You were sleeping with your neighbor? Or the crooks were?
