New member to this forum. I am a novice mac user, but i love this machine! I attempted to upgrade to OS X before updating the firmware - the screen has gone black and I can get nowhere now. The comp loads up like normal but the screen is black. What should I do?

Thanks for any help you can offer

This happened to me too and after several days of frustration I thought that the computer was history!
Here is the solution (bear with me as I am going from memory, but I think this is the proper sequence)

Start up the mac.

Once it has fully completed startup, hit "enter" a couple of times in case the finder is asking for something.

Next touch and hold the power button until the computer goes to sleep.

Wait until you hear the drive power down and the Mac is asleep. Wait about 2 minutes.

After the two minute wait, hit any key--the Mac should wake up and your screen should light up as per normal.

Once you are up and running, install the firmware update and reinstall OSX.

Good luck!

i had the same problem, what model is you iMac if it has a VGA port on the back u can hook it up to a monitor. What u need to do is boot up from an OS9 Cd. You are in a good position because yous is actually starting up. I had one tha would die on startup.
