I just replaced a Rage 128 pro with a Radeon 8500 in a Sawtooth. I was under the assumption that the drivers for the 8500 were already installed by Panther but it has since come to my attention that there have been instances where the drivers are not loaded at the time of install because that hardware component is not present.
Which was true for this computer at the time I installed Panther, I was running the Rage then.
So is there any definitive way to tell if the drivers for the Radeon are in place and if QE is working?
Can anyone with a Radeon 8500, Mac version or flashed, tell me what the card comes up as in their Panther system profiler?

thanks

As with any supported graphics drivers, you should look in /System/Library/Extensions to see if the appropriate graphics drivers are installed. I've never seen an install where graphics drivers weren't installed for the Radeons unless the card was newer than the OS or OS update.

If you want, reinstall the 10.3.2 update. You should be able to safely reapply that update since it's the latest one. It should install the latest drivers if they weren't installed for whatever reason.

I don't have it anymore, but I had a g4/400 that I had upgraded to an 8500. I had no problems at all installing it, but I don't remember if I had to install the drivers or not. Sorry I can't help except to tell you that it worked fine and that it was the best improvement I could have made with a small budget.

I did the same thing, I never had to install drivers under Jaguar or Panther, and have had no problems at all. "Quartz Extreme Check" will tell you if QE is enabled: http://www.entropy.ch/software/macos...tzextremecheck

You could just download the drivers from ati. You have a retail 8500? Isn't this card different than what Apple shipped with machines? Did Apple Macs with the 8500?
