Did the same thing, bought a 1 Ghz G4 then installed the Pioneer DVR-106. Works great, is seen by System Profiler as a supported/shipped drive.
Make sure you install it in the top bay where the combo drive is now. If you want to keep the combo drive move it to the bottom.
Oh, and make sure you take the front bezel off the drive tray, it will catch on the MDD.

I am also interested in upgrading my combo drive to a superdrive on my 1Ghz. G4.

I followed PowerMacMans's link to the DVR-106BK. Will this work in my G4? Will I need to perform a firmware upgrade first? Will it work natively with iPhoto, iTunes, iDVD just like a factory model?

Just hesitant to order if it doesn't quite work like I hope. If anyone can clear up any hitches for me I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks for all the help.

Make sure you put the SuperDrive on the top slot (Master).

Yes, the iLife package can see the drive.

See above posts. The other people who asked the same exact question already got an answer... yes, it will work. It's the exact same drive that ships with the G5s so there have to be drivers for it.

I was actually worried about any complexities. I read in other threads that people had issues unless they performed a firmware upgrade and was hoping since I do not have access to a PC that this certain model of optical drive would not require this.

Thanks though, I ordered the model PowerMacMan linked to and received it last night. The installation was easy and my machine recognized it as a "supported" drive.

The only thing that's bugging me now is after I tried burning my first disc straight from iDVD, it did not play on either my new Superdrive nor my original combo drive. I just received a black screen after DVD Player launched. I popped it into my home theater DVD player and it worked like a charm. Not sure why the disc wouldn't play on my computer.

Thanks everyone for the help upgrading to a superdrive!

I installed my DVR-106BLK that I got from Newegg.com, into the bottom slot of my DP1.25GHz PM and kept my combo drive in the Master position. It works just fine as the Slave Drive and is recognized as a SuperDrive by Panther and all iLife Apps.
