I have a dual 450 G4 and really can't afford a new G5. Has anyone had any experience with the various processor upgrades available? If so how do they work? I want to get a little more kick out of my machine but I also don't want to be broke either. Thanks.

As long as you feel its better financially for you to buy an upgrade (vs. taking what you'd pay for the upgrade plus what you could sell your machine for), they do a good job of improving an older machine's performance.
Check out xlr8yourmac.com for good reviews on various processor upgrades, plus check out their user-reported CPU upgrade database.

I had a G4/400 that despite a Radeon 8500 card and 640 MB of RAM was less than happy with X, it really was sluggish. After a GigaDesign G4/1.2 GHz it was a huge difference. I was reading a lot of user reviews at xlr8yourmac and Sonnet was good but did not include a heat sink, PL had stability problem and GigaDesign came out with flying colours. OWC own brand also seem to be good so any of those 430 dollar upgrades at 1.4 GHz will be good. The OWC seem to have a sligtly larger heatsink so it might be that that fan is slower and quiter than the GigaDesign (not that the GS is that loud)
I would avoid the sub 1 GHz upgrades, if 450 MHz is to slow (let alone a dual) then a 800 will be that as well. A 1.25-1.4 GHz G4 will be faster then the dual 450 in single CPU mode and also in SMP.
I now switch between a G4 dual 1.25 and that upgraded sawtooth and really does not feel any difference despite the dual CPUs and 67 MHz faster bus speed of the new box. And the dual is far more noisy, damn those 120mm Delta fans that Apple seem to found of, have they not heard of Panaflo?
The G4/400 whose performance was a trouble in games alredy during OS 9 now flies even in UT2004, now I am set to at least 2005 and then I can get dual 4 GHz G6 or something

My G4/400 is running OK with Panther -- of course, compared to my 120n PB it's slow, but there's quite a bit of difference between the 2 machines.
But I'm thinking of just going up to 800 mz -- how do you think that will work given that I'm not doing gaming?
But I just keep dithering. I'm thinking I don't want to put tons more money in the machine, especially since I have the PB.

I will eventually get a G4/1.2 or G4/1.4 GHz upgrade for my dual 450. For the time being, the processors are just cutting it, and the video card is passable. Once I can get a 1.4 GHz upgrade for <$300 I might spring for it. I'd guess about a year.

It will be faster but the 1.25 Ghz is still the best deal. And it runs quite nicely at 1.3 Ghz too!. I have installed several GigaDesign cards and love them. Not a single problem so far.
