Wanted some advice on Buying a G5.
Would you rather buy?
Dual 1.8 and an extra gig of ram
Or
Dual 2.0 and stay with 512 ram
Unfortunately I can't afford the dual 2.0 and get some extra ram.
What do you think?

The 1.8 with a gob of RAM. You'd get a far nicer user experience out of it, and the 1.8 is barely slower than the 2.0.
That said, I am somewhat inclined to say get neither and hold out for the next G5 revision. Typically, the Power Macs were updated every 6 months at around the end of January/early February and then again in late summer. But now that the G5 is in the picture, it may or not not be a completely different product release ball game. Frankly, nobody knows when new G5s are coming.
So if you buy now, you run the risk of having a new revision come out in a few weeks. But if you don't buy now, you might end up waiting far longer than you think you might have to for a new G5, making it better to just snag one now and start enjoying it.
Glad I'm not in your boat.

If you decide to buy now, I would definitely say that yes, you'll notice the benefits of the extra ram more than the diff in processor speed. The only thing I might add would be.....if you bought the dual 2GB, how long before you could afford to buy the extra RAM?

about a month. I was thinking you can always add some ram, but not processor speed. But anyways I'm probably still wait a week or two and if no new Powermac come out early Feb I'm just gonna go for it.

How about a Dual 2 GHz and buy the RAM elsewhere.
I'd go for the Dual 2.0 GHz and try to upgrade my RAM asap (do it yourself, not Apple, really easy).

IMHO, The Dual 2.0 is not worth the $500 premium over the Dual 1.8 when it comes to performance.

Well I planned on getting the ram from crucial. Just my budget right now I could only just get the G5 and add ram later.
Thanks Guys
