I am a photographer and process raw images with PSCS. I was wondering if anyone out there uses their eMacs to handle heavy loads in PS and also the raw processor. I use a camera that creates 36 meg files, so processor capabilites need to be strong. Right now, I am using a G3 400MHz machine and though I know the G4 1 gig processor in the eMac will be faster, how much of improvement is there.

Thanks,

X

Hey x,

I have both a DV 400 and a 1Ghz eMac and as you would imagine the difference is marked. CS wanes on the 400 with almost all processing (filters, resizing, adjusts etc) palpably slower. Actually you can forget about the processing it's worth the change just for startup times and the 17" screen and 1280x960 res alone. I bought the eMac at the last price drop as the defference in performance Vs the price of second hand iMacs no longer suggested value for moulah. Both being CRT monitors the eMac's is much brighter however can be a little patchy - remember this is Apple's cheapest machine Having said that you won't regret the performance boost or burn speed of the Combo or Super drive. Get as much ram as you can (1 GB is great on mine) .

The only thing I'd change would be upgrading the build to include a bigger, faster HD. The Combo model comes with a 40GB 5400rpm drive only - get a 7200 for an extra boost. Mind you if you're a capital 'H' heavy user maybe waiting for the much-anticipated G5 iMac would make you even happier. Oh wha tha' hell - get both!
