I am looking to replace the CD/DVD-ROM in my Sawtooth with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM. DVD burning is not something I need. I am of course looking for a model which will support iTunes.

Anyone have a particular model in mind?

you might try having a look over at xlr8yourmac - you can search on other people's experiences with all sorts of combinations of drives and macs.

Check out XLR8YourMac as Mr. Blur suggested.

I've got a Mystic (aka Gigabit Ethernet G4), and put an LG GCC-4320B in. 32x CD-R, 10x CD-RW, 40x CD and 16x DVD. I had to install hacked drivers when I bought it, but I think OS X natively supports this drive now.

One thing to consider when purchasing DVD/CD drives for your Mac, aside from compatibility, is the physical layout of the front of the drive. If you'll look closely, CD/DVD drives shipped with PowerMacs have only one buton (eject) and is located on the far-right of the face. Make sure that when buying drives, it matches that kind of face. The reason being that multi-button drives (Play/Pause, Stop/Eject) don't work well with the front bezel of the chassis. When you press the plastic eject button of the bezel, it pushes the right corner of the drive. Two-button drives don't work as well in this setup.

I've generally been pleased with Plextor/Liteon for the Mac. I had a Plextor 8/4/32 before replacing it with a faster Liteon 52/24/52, both with the one-button face.

I got a similar LG combo drive for my Gigabit Ethernet G4. It's the 48x model, and it's fully supported for everything. It does require a bit of extra force to open using the button, but I normally use the keyboard to open it anyway.

one last issue to add is the time between tracks with the lite-on drives. I have a MDD and bought a lite-on 52x from newegg and it originally needed hacked drivers but I don't think it does anymore but I'm not sure if it still requires a certain time interval between songs in itunes since I burn everything with toast.
