I have been looking to order the dual 2.0 refurb as I'm tired of waiting for the 'upgrades' and 2399 for the top of the line isn't bad. (plus when and if the upgrades come I'd be looking at the midrange anyway)

So I wake up this morning and see that HEY the dual 2.0 is in stock again! But I'm running late so I head to work (Roads are covered in ice)...I Get to work, go to order and......no dual 2.0. Instead a dual 1.8 is there and they totally removed the dual 2.0.

I called the Apple Store but alas, no dual 2.0s :c(

That's still a VERY tempting price on the dual 1.8.

However: You can't change the video card on it. (Or can you?)

No, you can't.

Refurbs can not be BTO unfortunately.

You should have gotten it when you saw it...because I think I got yours .

But seriously, I ordered one Tuesday and it came Wednesday. Never wait 'till the last minute.

So how is my machine Mike

Any issues with it? Is it "snappy" etc.

What are your overall impressions and are you happy with overall performance?

One last thing...does the refurb come in a powermac box or a 'brown paper bag'.

Check out the developers online store and see if they have a special deals section, I'm not sure if they do off the top of my head.

I also don't have a direct link, but its off of the main developer.apple.com site.

I love this thing. I mean, I've had G3's and G4's, but THIS machine kicks ass. Really. It's the first Mac I've had in a long time that really feels FAST.

I think the reason why the others haven't is because of the fact that Windows, even XP, is very, VERY fast with its GUI and IE renders.

My 1GHz G4 17" Powerbook booted in EXACTLY the same amount of time it took my 2.53GHz P4 to boot - from power button to login screen. This takes HALF the time. Literally.

Then - I just had to do it - I got a 23" Cinema Display. I brought my wife down and said "look, I don't have to cram anything anymore. I love this!".

Code Warrior compiles are wicked fast. I just installed Final Cut Pro 4 so I haven't played with it yet.

Yes - it came in a "brown paper bag" .

The Dual 1.8's may soon become the low end Mac, when they release the upgrades soon. Perhaps it's worth waiting a little while.

Interestingly, now they seem to have sold out of all refurb G5s (though they still have the new old 1.8 singles).

I really hope updates come soon. Perhaps even next week?!

Also drHo, yes you can use your student discount to get refurbished products. I don't think they offer refurbished units in the developer store though.

As to the question of whether they come in new boxes or not, they do not. Mine came in a brown box, when you open it up, there's a colorful cardboard cover over the keyboard, mouse, cables, etc., then the machine is under that. I was kinda looking forward to the box which shows the machine, so, I did the next best thing. Since it came to my work, I tore the box open, took the G5 out, and put it on my bench for all to see. It was 30 seconds later that I had a crowd of 5 around my bench asking about it...

The prices of refurbs in the retail and student stores are the same.

You're right. I was looking at the new machines listed in the "Save" section. They are cheaper on the student store. Interesting.

Hi,
The option for the refurb'd DP1.8's came back up this morning. I placed my order, but at checkout (and on the order status page) it informed me that my order would ship within 30 days. Is this consistent with what everyone else sees when ordering refurb'd products?

Thanks,
Brian

Not always the case.

The dual 2.0 G5 was 2399 Refurb and it is 2699 for student discount new.

If that were the case I'd have jumped on a new one

And I'm jealous of you Mike

When I get my G5 I'll be using a 17 inch NEC LCD with it along with an old 15inch LCD.....Hopefully I can swing a 20 inch Apple with my birthday coming up in April..

Uh, no, that's odd. I got mine the next day.

I think he meant that the price of reburbs in the main store are the same price as refurbs in the education store. (Not refurb vs. new)

- edit: It looks a if some of you have found different results. I can't tell right now as they are all out of G5s in the refurb section again.
(But I'm ok if you all say I'm wrong on this one.)

I always thought the "special deals" link took you to the same refurb section

Oh well...I think they only differ on the "new unopened units" that are in the refurb section.
