i have a G4 400 and i am looking at upgrading to a 1.3ghz G4 to get a better capture on vhs video.

i have no trouble capturing digital video, but capturing vhs from a vcr run through my canopus advc-100 is giving mixed results. sometimes the audio is slight off, other times it drops frames left and right, but it differs depending on the vhs copy.

and i know this seems like obviously it would help, but i just need to know before spending $400+ on a new processor, so thanks to anyone who can help me out.

oh, and my memory is 576 currently, but i am going to take out a 64MB and put in a 512MB with this upgrade as well, i know that should help.
as ever,
sonny

Don't know for sure if it will help, but you have another option...

Apple are currently selling single CPU 1.25ghz G4's for about $800.

You could sell your G4 400 and put it together with the $400 you would spend on the upgrade and get better FSB, DDR etc.

Just a thought.

Peace,

Marc

Anyways, I would recommend a processor upgrade. The G4s evolved so slowly by way of bandwidth/bus speed during their day that it would almost not be worth the hassle of selling your old machine and scouting out a new one, and buying new RAM for it, and moving your files over... etc etc.

I am personally going to go with the Dual 1.25-1.33GHz GigaDesigns processor upgrade for my QuickSilver as soon as finances allow. The reports over @ XLR8 have been very good, showing that the upgrades seem to overclock into the 1.4GHz range and beyond with some ease. With one guy running his @ Dual 1.53GHz with perfect stability for weeks now.

I'm not sure a processor upgrade will help. After all, DV is 3.6 Mbps and your computer captures that just fine.

I have to wonder whether the audio problems et. al. arise from the VHS tapes or the VCR, and not the computer.
