Can someone recommend a memory upgrade for my machine? I have 2x512 and 1x256. Can I put a 1gb chip in? will THIS work?
Thanks!

Pretty sure you're limited to 2.0GB; one 512MB module in each of the four slots. I don't think the 1GB modules are supported in that machine.
Check www.crucial.com for memory. Always good quality and guaranteed compatibility.

Oddly enough, the MDDs will work with 1GB modules. But for some reason that I have heard is related to the system controller, the system will only recognize 2GBs, even with four 1GB DIMMs installed.

Thanks Guys,
PowerMacMan, so in not recognising does that equate to not utilizing it and thus being wasted?

Essentially.
Whether or not this is something that can be fixed in the future with a firmware update or something similar, I do not know. But for now, it would be a waste.

Same deal with the Yosemite G3 and the Yikes! G4... they support up to 1GB of RAM (4 x 256MB)... but it'll still "work" if you pop in a 512MB module - it'll just recognize it as a 256MB module. The rest will be wasted.

Similar.
Though from what I have been hearing... If you put a 1GB stick in an MDD, it will recognize the full 1GB and use it. If you put a second stick in, same thing, and you'll have a full 2GB. But if you put in a 3rd or 4th 1GB DIMM, the system will still only see up to 2GBs. I am not sure if it starts to see all of the DIMMs as 512MB if you put in four 1GB DIMMs, or if it simply doesn't see the second 2 DIMMs at all.
The fact that it will see and use a 1GB DIMM does make me think that at one point in the future, after a firmware update or something, that the MDDs will see 4GBs.
