I have a 350 mhz imac that i believe needs a new motherboard. Would a motherboard from a 400mhz imac work in its place?

What about the firewire ports, etc. Since the original 350 doesn't have them. Would a 500mhz board work then also?

The processor was moved in newer models, and therefore the "heatsink" will not match up properly with the processor if you aren't careful. Also, you can get a board far cheaper on exchange for the exact same board than you can doing an outright purchase.
