i have a dual 500 gigabit ethernet g4 and i recently retrieved it from my other residence and when i plugged it in it automatically powers up, gives a long programmer's tone and boots into the open firmware screen. this is the only thing it wants to do. i have been through apple knowledge base and i have reset the pmu, nvram, tested the battery and now i am at a loss. any thoughts? deep down i think it is the logic board and it should be replaced. could it be the front panel connector? one other thing, the computer will not power down holding the power button; i have to manually unplug the computer. any help would be awesome. thanks.

Hello,
i have exactly the same problem with my Dual 450.
i think it's the front panel board.
if you wan't your mac to work, do this:
- unplug power,
- unplug the ribbon cable (from logic board to front panel board)
- plug in power
- plug in the ribbon cable for 1 second. just for starting up an then leave it unplugged.
- close your case and work
- use the standby and don't shut down
i know this isn't very comfortable, but i don't know where to buy a front panel board here in germany.
greetings,
fishlolli

Have you tried (from within Open Firmware):
reset-nvram
reset-all
reboot (or mac boot, I forget which works)
?

Several years ago I had taken my G4 dual 450 in for some minor repairs to the door hinge. While that was being repaired the shop told me that the original mother board had and issue that wasn't disclosed to the original owners of these machines. Even though I wasn't experiencing any problems at the time and my machines was still warranty, they replaced my entire motherboard and front panel electronics. You might now be experiencing the problem that they described to me.
