Well,

To all im looking to purchase a Dual 1.8 G5. I have a 17" powerbook g4 1gig ram 1gig proc, and i love it! I do all my video editing/Photoshop projects on it and it just not fast enough now, but it gets the job done!=) I use Imovie/Finalcut pro. With this said i am in need to purchase a machine with some rendering speed. (i.e. Dual 1.8 1 gig ram.? or single 1.8 with 4gig ram ? The ultimate question is , I have the chance now to buy a dual 1.8 for $2199.00
and a 17" Cinema for 399.00 ( Re-freshed no dead pixels). Or should i wait for the next rev ? and get a dual 2.0? Im not looking for anyone to make a decision for me, just advice any would help. =)

thanks

-mike

Do you need it right now? Get it now.

Can you wait a few weeks? Wait a few weeks.

I would personally suggest you wait a few weeks, something new is just around the corner!

Careful... people have been saying "wait a few weeks" for a few months, now.

Yup, that a good point as well. How much can you wait, we can keep waiting and waiting, Where would most if you draw the line and just buy somthing ?

Would the next rev give us the option to upgrade the cpu's ? say from dual 1.8's to 2.6 or 3gig ? Or do you think apple would never offer that in the upgrade market.?

Buy refurbished now. That way, if new machines come out soon, you will feel a little better once the price on the current ones drop since you saved a few hundred by going refurbished.

At this point, never. Sure, had I known new G5s wouldn't be out by now, I would have gotten a dual 1.8 several months ago. But that missed opportunity is a sunk cost. I have to look at the situation today, and my best guess is that there will be an upgrade no later than the end of March (when the Australia G4 tradeup deal expires).

Buying refurbished isn't a bad choice either, although it doesn't work for me because my state's 8% sales tax eats up much of the savings.

Apple's made it pretty clear they don't like processor upgrades; they'd much rather you buy a new Mac. But I won't be surprised at all if Powerlogix and others figure out how to upgrade current and future G5s.
