Will the Xserve run with a plain version of Mac OS X installed? I'm thinking about getting one to use as a dedicated FileMaker Server. The FileMaker people do not recommend using the FileMaker Server on a Mac OS X Server machine.

Machine support is in the kernel extensions, which are open source. Therefore, it should work fine, as long as it is at least as new as the version that came with the machine. (i.e. if the machine came with 10.3 server, you wouldn't want to put 10.2.3 on it)
