I just received my new Power Mac, G5, 1,6Ghz, 512mb from Apple. So I turn it on, everything fine, very quiet. Then after a while it turns itself off, totaly off. When I turn it on again it's louder, the PSU fans are spinning continuosly. It feels like something may have gone wrong. Is this so? What to do, does it have to go back to Apple, took a month to get it, I'm not that interested in sending it back right away, ideas, advice?

Thanks for any intelligent thoughts and ideas.

The fact that the machine just randomly powered down on you could be several things. It could be the power supply, but that isn't likely. More likely is that either your PMU is corrupt or that your processor is overheating. I would try resetting the PMU first. If that doesn't do the trick, then hopefully you know someone with a G5 that would be willing to help you out. If so, try switching out processors (BTW, the processor and the heat-sink are a single unit and should never be separated) and see if the problem goes away, stays with the machine, or follows the processor. That should give you an answer.
