I'm looking for an Internal Combo Drive (CR-RW/DVD) for my QuickSilver 800 Mhz to replace the built-in CD righter. I've heard that the combo drives that Apple uses are Toshiba?

Do you guys know wish one is compatible with finder CD burning, DVD Player, iTunes and all other apps? And where to buy?

Your best bet would be the LG GCC-4480B Combo Drive. It is the most compatable of all the combo drives out there right now. Down side is that it has been replaced by LG, so you might have to hunt a little to find out. You'll likely find a few if you search PriceWatch. Also search eBay.

You could also get an external firewire burner and then leave the internal one to copy disks faster.

Just bought one of the 4480 LGs... (guess we're backwards in the UK, as they are still in stock!)

Excellent drive in all respects.

Checking the drive reports at XLR8YourMac, the LG GCC-4520 (probably almost the same as the GCC-4521 you linked to) is not supported in OS X. Using a utility called PatchBurn, you can get some functionality. It is bootable, it works with Toast, and after patching, it should work in iTunes and Finder. But no guarantees.

Or you could buy this.

Is the one you linked fully supported by the finder and all iLife apps? It's very cheap!

That is the highly sought after LG GCC-4480B. It is supported just as well as an Apple-supplied drive in OS X. Jump on it, when I linked to it there were two available, and now there is only one. I don't know when another will show up on eBay.

Do you think we would have both referred you to the 4480 if it weren't supported? What would have been the point in that?

I can't say enough good things about the Pioneer 106d drive which I bought from OWC. I put it in my Sawtooth G4 and it's smooth.

Same I installed the same Drive in my Sawtooth as well and it is flawless. OS X picks it right up and everything is supported.
