Two years ago I bought a 256 module from crucial for $27.00 with free shipping. Now the price for a 256 module is $119.00!!! I don't get it.
Is this because my G4 400 Sawtooth is outdated and they're really not making anymore ram for the older models, thus the price went up?

I wish I would have bought more back then

You could get a 256MB stick from crucial for $93.

The price went up because your machine is old and there isn't much demand for that ram anymore. Also, a few years ago prices were depressed from overproduction.

The price is a little better here, and they've sold me good RAM:

RAM prices were way down at the time because of overproduction and a general slump in computer spending. The prices were far enough down that most RAM vendors were losing money.

The memory market hasn't passed Sawtooths by yet, even the mainstream DDR modules are still much higher than same-sized modules during the low-price period. I was lucky enough to snap up over a GB right before the prices went back up.

You can always go with PC-133 SDRAM in your Sawtooth (that's what I'm using right now). It's a lot more common and often cheaper than the PC-100. It won't run any faster but it's almost always compatible.

You can get 256mb PC-133 sticks for as low as CDN$70 (US $50).

It's actually because there isn't much supply for that ram anymore. A smaller demand always create downward pressure on price.

A combination of skill and luck had my buying PC100 3 times for my Sawtooth, each time hitting a low price point. Heck, I had a DIMM sitting on my desk 2 months before I even bought the machine!

I might have some spare memory around at home, if you're at all interested in buying it.

I'm hoping SDRAM prices will drop again soon. I am wanting to replace my 3 assorted DIMMs (two generic, one Crucial) with three identical 512MB CL2 Crucial, Kingston or Viking DIMMs.

Tough call. Places like eBay will probably be your best shot at getting cheaper prices. Myself, I bought all the 512MB DIMMs I could buy for my G4/400 back when RAM prices were at their all time low.

PC1xx will be here to stay for maybe a few more years, but don't expect their prices to drop to even 2/3 of what they are now, not with DDR becoming the choice these days.

I bought a GB of PC133 RAM (2 512 sticks) about a year ago. $50 each after rebate. Haven't seen them that cheap since.

I guess my DP800 will never hit the 1.5GB maximum (1.25GB now).
