I have a one-and-a-half year old IMAC Flat Screen. The hard drive just quit and I am trying to replace it under Maxtor's warranty. Since the Apple coverage is up I called Maxtor only to be told that even though the warranty stated on the drive says its covered through July 2005, they will not cover it since it was part of an Apple system and is covered by their (Apple) warranty. Has anyone else had a similar experience or have any advise other than footing the bill for a new drive myself?

That's the whole point of OEM agreements: the manufacturer passes all warranty and support issues to the company that actually sells to the consumer.

You're not going to get Apple to help you out, unfortunately, so just bite the bullet and go buy a new drive yourself.

When drives are sold to companies such as Apple by the drive manufacturers, they are sold as OEM, and usually it is up to the company that manufactured the computer to support the drive and not the original drive manufacturer once they are sold. Basically it is like Maxtor is transfering ownership of the drive to Apple and all support/warranty responsibility as well.

Thanks for the feedback. I kinda thought that there might not be a way to get Maxtor or Apple to own up to a lousy deal for consumers. I was hoping someone had a slant that I had missed.

Eh, you can take the opportunity to put in a nice big drive, and it won't even be expensive.
