This summer at the latest. May/June I'd say. Almost nobody buys a computer between february and may.

I'd be looking at the shorter game myself.
Steve prmoised 3Ghz 'within' a year. I can't see a jump of 1ghz in one go, and if they don't update incrementally in a few weeks time, they will miss the deadline.
I'd say about 2.5 ghz within a month, and then the further 500mhz before the year is up...
Peace,
Marc

As my mom would always say when I ask
Are we there yet
Is it over yet
Is it dinner time
Soon - of course soon always felt like an eternity.

Ya, I am getting impatient too but I think that the new revision should be in March. If it doesn't happen then it probably won't happen until the Summer.

I hear ya... I am sitting on the money... waiting... waiting... waiting...
Of course it will be worth if the next Rev has the following..
1) At least 2.5Ghz of G5 goodnesss
2) New updated top end video card (Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB)
3) New displays to go with the update (20/25/30).
All of that, at the same price points, and I will be a happy guy (and Apple will get my $5K)
Of course, if they make me wait till Summer, I want that 3.0Ghz goodness!

Doesn't this all depend on how well the current models are selling?
If they are still selling well then Apple may as well wait and introduce a huge upgrade which blows people away. People who are waiting for an upgrade may be pushed into buying by a 1GHZ leap.
But if they are continuing to sell well then Apple can wait as long as it likes.
I hope the G5 Powerbooks get here soon, I'd love a dual G5 but I don't think I could lose the mobility.

What about dual optical bays like the G4s? I just wonder why they don't let you have 2 superdrives, is it a power issue or a heat issue?

Right now, its a "wont fit in the current case" issue.
I can see a future case revision, but not yet. I expect nothing but a speed bump sometime in March (if Apple's past introductions are any indication).

I am almost certain of an early summer speedbump and it will jump straight to 3 GHz. I think it is important for many reasons, especially to end the MHz gap and at the same time get all those that didn't jump at the first 1.6 to 2.0 line jump. When the G5 was originally introduced IBM had indicated only that they had plenty of 1.8 GHz G5s and that was to be their initial ceiling. It wound up being 2.0 GHz. A jump to 3 GHz is so much more impressive than two 500 MHz jumps. Steve will keep his promise, he will impress everyone, he will end the stupid MHz difference between PPC and x86 and he will shed off the bad karma that has been lurking around the PPC scaling in people's minds.
This is I believe plan A.
Plan B comes into effect if IBM cannot make enough 3 GHz G5s. Plan B is not desirable because it will undermine Steve's word, it will not generate the oohs and ahhs needed for a rampant buying spree and it will strengthen the image of the PPC line of processors that they are a problem architecture. That is plan B. This plan will only come in effect if IBM doesn't deliver.
My theory.

Agreed that the minor problems that plagued earlier G5's are probably just now being fixed on the assembly line. That and the probable shortage of 2nd gen chips are whats holding up the release.
I can't imagine Apple jumping 1ghz with one release. Just imagine if you bought a month or so too soon....
Now if they want to drop prices $500, I could care less and I'll buy now. I think that there woud be plenty of us happy with dual 1.8s for $1999. I'd be even happier if I could buy that and a 20" cinema display for 3K.

My theory.
Is there even anything left in the myth to end?
AMD are the geek ship suppliers of choice(!), but are already overtaken speed wise by the G5. Even though they have the A64 and Opteron chips, they all run at lower mhz than the current G5s, let aloine the Rev B's, even though performance is good.
One down.
Just Intel is left, and do they even count any more? Do they have any credibility left?
They have just released the Prescott chip that will be running at 3.8 ghz by Summer. But it is *way* too hot to do anything with, and preformance wise is worse than the Northwood. All they did was add pipelines to get more Mhz, but in actual performance terms it is no gain... infact in most tests, it benches worse than the Northwood!
Also, with no desktop 64 bit option until "2006", they are doing themselves no favours.
IMHO ther is very little of the myth left to dispell in peoples minds, they *know* PPC is up there.
I think that although the war is not over, IBM are winning the battles so far.
Peace,
Marc

We need to remember that Apple is a business and is going to put out new machines as part of its business plan. If the current PMs are selling well Apple will hold off on the next rev. If they are not, they will increase incentives for buying the G5s (Memory, refurbs, etc).
We know they have new chips.
We know that Steve said 3Ghz by "end of summer 2004"
We know there will be another rev.
Apple does not want to have a bad quarter in terms of Powermac sales, so I am guessing that they are either doing pretty well or well enough to make their numbers and are ramping up for a bigger splash with more unexpected features in the next revision.

Ya, but even with the G4's on Apple's site you can only get a superdrive and a combo drive...no x2 superdrives. Are they bigger then a combo drive?

Unclear what the need for two superdrives would be. The reason for a super + a combo drive is that the combo is much faster at burning CDs. I'm not sure simultaneous burning of two media is really an option ... wouldn't this be slow, as the drives share the ATA bus, and thus the bandwidth?
Anyway, no way a case change will come that quickly. It'll be in the Rev. B, perhaps, (i.e. the fall when the G5 goes 3GHz) but not in the upcoming speed-bumps.

I'm posting here because like others I need a new Powermac soon. No later than the end of April. I can't wait until September for them to hit the 3ghz mark. If I go top of the line and spend 3k then I don't want to be screwed out of 2ghz of speed for the same price five months later. Don't even bother to argue otherwise.
However if Apple dropped prices by $500 then I wouldn't feel so bad about spending 2K knowing that there will be something faster around the corner but at a higher price tag. They won't do this however (except when the new models are released). This ram promotion is silly considering that most of us buy from third party anyway. However it does signify that we'll probably see an update at the beginning of April. My original prediction was March 2nd based on a promotion that MacConnection was running. However this one is comng directly from the horse's mouth.

I'm in the same boat. I'm starting my advanced Photoshop & design classes which require Mac OS X or Windows XP. My beige G3 can't run either. Anyway, the fall semester is after Summer. So even if they're released in March or August, I think I'll be able to pull it off. A month or so in the computer lab won't kill me if it means I'll be getting a better computer for my money.

I'm with Eug here: Apple will update the G5 line to 2.5 GHz on the top-end, and they'll probably have a single 2.0 system at the low-end. I don't expect prices to change substantially.
A lot of people here think that Apple doesn't have to do an update until the 3 GHz mark in the summer, but I disagree. Simple: AMD and Intel chips are getting faster, so Apple has to stay competitive to keep sales going. Not only that but there are people who are waiting to see if IBM pulls a Motorola and has trouble delivering upgrades on time. Shipping 2.5 GHz chips in March would be a good way to prove that Apple and IBM can regularly deliver significant upgrades.

Uh... The Athlon64 3400+ and Athlon64 FX-51 both run at 2.2 GHz.
I am not saying that it is a better processor or even which is faster, but you mentioned MHz in relation to the G5 and that makes your statement inaccurate:

Well, there was nothing today (unless Apple has some last-minute update in store). I'm inclined to think that the update won't happen for another 2 weeks. Stocks are running low at places like Small Dog, but I don't know how widespread this kind of shortage is.

Usually with any updates, they wait until 12-1:00 to announce, and that would be pacific time. it's only 8:30am there right now, so who knows. Maybe, maybe not.
